THE ISP AIMED TO PROVIDE ESSENTIAL FINANCIAL RELIEF TO DISPLACED INFORMAL SECTOR WORKERS IMPACTED BY THE ECONOMIC CHALLENGES OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

The Ministry of Equity, Social Justice, and Empowerment is pleased to announce the successful completion of the Income Support Program (ISP), a significant initiative under the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB)- funded "Safety Nets for Vulnerable Populations Affected by the Coronavirus" Project. Launched on September 19, 2023, the ISP aimed to provide essential financial relief to displaced informal sector workers impacted by the economic challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over the past year, the ISP disbursed a one-time cash transfer of XCD 1,500 to beneficiaries across all constituencies. 5,088 individuals benefited from the program, offering much-needed support to vulnerable groups not covered by existing cash transfer programs. This initiative played a crucial role in stabilizing the economic situation of many families, providing a safety net during these challenging times.

Minister for Equity, Social Justice, and Empowerment, Hon. Joachim Henry, expressed his gratitude for the program's success, stating, “The Income Support Program was vital in assisting the most vulnerable in our society during an unprecedented crisis. This initiative demonstrated the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind, especially in times of great need. We remain dedicated to refining our social protection mechanisms to better serve the people of Saint Lucia.”

The program's impact extended beyond financial assistance; it also fostered economic stability and inclusivity by reaching underserved individuals in communities nationwide. The Ministry acknowledges the critical role of the Welfare and Social Transformation Officers, who actively engaged communities to enhance the accessibility of the program.

Permanent Secretary, Dr. Charmaine Hippolyte Emmanuel highlighted the Ministry’s collaborative efforts, saying, “The successful execution of the ISP is a testament to the dedication and collaboration between our Ministry, the CDB, and other key partners. We recognize the significant role this program played in supporting households across Saint Lucia and remain committed to developing future programs that respond effectively to the needs of our people.”

The Ministry extends its heartfelt thanks to the public for their patience and understanding throughout the implementation of the ISP. The collective efforts of government agencies, partners, and the CDB have helped make this initiative a success, ensuring that those most in need received timely support. As the program concludes, the Ministry remains committed to refining future initiatives to better serve the people of Saint Lucia.
