With anticipation and national pride, health officials and team members from the Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs gathered at the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception on Tuesday, February 18, to participate in the Independence Baton Relay.
The Ministry’s representatives proudly accepted the Independence Baton as the team embarked on a spirited march through the streets of Castries, proceeding from the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception to the William Peter Boulevard.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Jenny Daniel, said: “Today I’m a very proud Saint Lucian and very proud to be part of the baton relay in recognition of Saint Lucia’s 46th Independence Anniversary. Of course, it’s a special occasion for the Ministry of Health being highlighted as part of the theme."
She emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to promoting health and wellness in alignment with this year’s Independence theme.
"We continue to make significant strides in advancing the theme of this year’s Independence celebrations, ‘Douvan Ansanm: Health and Wellbeing for a Prosperous Nation’. The Ministry remains dedicated to expanding healthcare access, strengthening Universal Health Coverage (UHC), and promoting wellness initiatives that enhance the lives of all citizens. From preventive care and essential health services to community-driven wellness programs, we prioritize the health and well-being of our people. Our mandate is to foster a culture of health and wellness for the entire population, encouraging individuals to embrace healthy lifestyles that contribute to longer, happier, and more fulfilling lives. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy Independence."
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sharon Belmar-George also shared her excitement about this year’s Independence theme and its alignment with the Ministry’s ongoing efforts.
“This signifies what the Ministry of Health has been speaking to the public about, healthy lifestyles. So we’re pleased to participate, with representatives from almost all of team health,” she noted.
Chief Environmental Health Officer Cheryl Eugene St. Romain underscored how the event provides a valuable opportunity to educate the public on key aspects of environmental health.
"Be it that this is just a short leg, at least we will be reaching the masses, letting them know what environmental health is about, its focus, vector control, and all the other components of environmental health. So I’m really happy that we are given this opportunity to be part of the Baton Relay."
After a successful leg of the relay, the Ministry’s representatives gracefully handed the baton to another organization, ensuring that the journey of national pride continued through the city streets.
The Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Elderly Affairs extends gratitude to all participants and organizers of the event and reaffirms its commitment to the health and well-being of every Saint Lucian.
