This year, Commonwealth Remembrance Day will be observed on November 10, 2024. Senior government officials will join the Saint Lucia Branch of the Royal Commonwealth Ex-Service League and the Royal Canadian Legion to lay wreaths at the Cenotaph on the Derek Walcott Square and the War Graves at the Choc Cemetery to honour the lives that were lost in service of country over eighty years ago during the first and second World Wars.
Following the ceremonies, the Saint Lucia Branch of the Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services League will hold its annual reunion reception at the Prime Minister’s Official Residence.
Since attaining Independence from Britain in 1979, Commonwealth Remembrance Day remains a significant fixture on our national calendar of events. The solemnity of the occasion invites our nation to pay tribute to the Saint Lucian and West Indian soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure peace, freedom and democracy prevailed over tyranny and evil.
The family members of our veterans symbolize their legacies and carry on their memories. The Government of Saint Lucia encourages the public to support the Saint Lucia Branch of the Royal Commonwealth Ex-Service League to preserve the legacies left behind by our departed veterans so that future generations can attain a profound appreciation of their sacrifices and peace-loving values that has protected our democracy.
Commonwealth Remembrance Day perpetually signals the enduring triumph of our democratic values. The occasion is an irrefutable reminder that good ultimately defeats evil. The Government of Saint Lucia will forever be indebted to our veterans for what they did for humanity.
